Flash floods strike the Tibet-Nepal border

Devastating floods have struck the region bordering northern Nepal and Tibet, leaving more than 1,300 people missing across both countries. Among the missing on the Nepal side are hundreds of tourists from 28 nations, including the UK, the US, and India.

The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 26. The Nepalese government believes that an avalanche on the Tibetan side of the border blocked a river; the accumulated water subsequently breached the blockage, sending floodwaters surging down the valley. Entire villages, along with roads, bridges, and power stations, were swept away.

Videos on social media show the Gyirong border crossing—located in Gyirong County, Shigatse City, Tibet—submerged by floodwaters.

By Thursday, August 27, Nepal had confirmed at least 165 deaths, while Chinese state media reported at least three fatalities on the Tibetan side.
